Nicely.....
Nottingham Forest are the only club to have the won the European Cup more times than they have won their own domestic league.
Forest won promotion to the top flight in the 1976/77 season, by finishing third in Division 2. The following year Forest continued to improve under Brian Clough and won their first and only top flight title in the 1977/78 season. They are the last side to win the top flight in the season following promotion. In 1979 Forest achieved the unthinkable, they won their first European Cup, defeating the holders Liverpool 2-0 over two legs in the first round, and then winning 1-0 versus Malm? in the final. From a second division English side, to the champions of Europe in only three seasons!
This Forest team was far from finished yet, they retained their European title the following year, with a 1-0 victory over Hamburg, and also captured the European Super Cup that year, defeating Barcelona 2-1 over two legs.
They never won another league title. |
